No. 14206259, 6th Battalion Border Regiment.

Joseph died on 5th August 1943, aged 21.

He was the son of Edmond John and Jane Jones from Lancashire, and husband of Audrey Violet Jones of Hasketon.

Joseph is burried in Hasketon Churchyard and is also remembered on the Memorial in Skelmersdale, Lancashire.

Personal

Joseph was born in Skelmersdale, Lancashire on 16th July 1922. His parents were Edmund John Jones [B. Liverpool 1902] and Jane Hardman [B. Skelmersdale, 1899]. We understand he was a great lover of music and played the accordeon. In late1942 he met and married Audrey Violet Thrower of Morley Farm, Hasketon while his regiment was posted to Suffolk. They had one child, Maurice, who was born in the summer of 1943. Audrey died in 2011 and is burried in Hasketon Churchyard close to Joseph.

Military.

The 6th Battalion Border Regiment had originally been formed in August 1914, but had been disbanded in early 1918. In April 1939, when war with Germany was looking likely the Territorial battalions of the Border Regiment were expanded to create the 6th (East Cumberland) Battalion. Early in the War this battalion served in a Home Defense role, and at some stage in 1941-2 was posted to Suffolk. In late summer 1943 it moved to Gailes Camp in Ayrshire, for training as a ‘Beach Group’ – these groups had the job of organising beach operations in amphibious landings. Sadly Joseph was diagnosed with leukemia at about this time and died in Colchester Military Hospital on 5th August 1943, just 3 weeks after his 21st birthday.
