Cyril was No. 2754280, 7th Battalion Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), and was killed fighting in Tunisia on 21st January 1943, aged 29.
We think he probably lived in one of Thorpe Hall cottages.
He is burried in Tripoli war Cemetary.
Personal.
Cyrils parents were Joseph W. Dunnett, [B. Hasketon,1875] and Lily Dunnet [B. Grundisburgh 1881]. In the 1921 census they were living at Brooke Cottage, Grundisburgh. Later on in the 1939 Register their address is given as ‘Lerope’ Hall Cottages (probably a transcribing error of Thorpe Hall Cottages).
Military
The 7th Battalion Black Watch was part of the 154th Highland Brigade of 51st Highland division. This unit also included the 1st Battalion of the Black Watch and the 7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. They moved to Africa in August 1942, fought at the pivotal Battle of El Alamein, and took part in the pursuit of the German Afrika Corps as they retreated towards Tunisia. There was major fighting around Tripoli as the allies attempted to take the town during January 1943, and Cyril’s date of death coincides with this.
