Sergeant Arthur Herbert Newby.

No. 19787 20th Battalion Hussars and No. 18589 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, who died 4th October 1917.
Arthur has no known grave, is remembered at the Tyne Cot Memorial, Ypres, and possibly at Messing, Essex. also

He was born in Hasketon on 29th January 1894, but was living in Stapleford Abbots, Essex in 1901, and Bradwell and Pattiswick, Essex in 1911.  He was a horseman and stockman.

His parent were Henry and Rosetta Newby.

Military service.

Unusually, Arthurs Army service Records do still exist, though they are badly damaged and only partially legible. He initially joined the Hussars (no. 19787), then transferred to the 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment (18589) on June 2nd 1915 and was promoted to sergeant in 4th Feb 1917.   He was killed on the 4th October 1917.  This indicates he was probably killed in the late stages of the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Paschendale).
